Shopping for musical items for someone with no knowledge in music can be as complicated as buying kitchen appliances for a man who does not have a clue of what goes on in the kitchen.
The kitchen is a common room that has functions that go on which are vital for providing food for everyone in the home. However, most of the time, it is only the woman of the home who knows what goes on in the kitchen. Many times, the others in the house just wait for the prepared food. As it is most of the time people assume that they know all that goes on in the kitchen. I realized this when it happened to me.
We needed a blender for the child and my wife was preparing to go off to buy the blender when I asked her to let me do it since she was already exhausted after doing all the house work. When I got to the kitchen appliance store, I was amazed at the number of different blenders that were on offer. I had to call my wife and she had to lead me step by step, by phone, as I looked for the ideal blender.
The same scenario befell me but this time it was as I was shopping for musical appliances. My last born son is very active and he is especially quite fond of musical sounds. We realized this when we noticed that he would always try to produce sound mostly by hitting against things using different materials. He would drum his spoon on the table while eating and he would often clap his hands on different surfaces. We noticed that when he produced these sounds he would usually cock his ear to one side carefully listening and that is when we realized he was trying to make a beat.
When we explained this to one of our friends who is an expert in child care he told us that this was a major sign showing that our son could have great potential in music and especially in playing musical instruments. He encouraged us that we should nurture this interest in our son and we could eventually end up having a great musician.
We decided to follow his advice and this is what led to our decision to buy our son a musical instrument. Naturally I said that I would be the one to shop for the musical instrument. I guess I assumed that since I loved listening to music, then I would also have an easy time shopping for an ideal instrument for my son.
When I got to the music store, just as when shopping for the blender, I was perplexed by the array of musical instruments. I did not know where to begin. This time I could however not call my wife since I knew she would be clueless so I decided to ask the store attendant for assistant. The attendant advised me to buy my son a beginner’s digital piano. He said that this was an ideal instrument for a child since it was easy to use and it was hardy and could withstand rough handling.
